is a filmmaker, archivist, and writer based in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently working on Metroplex, an experimental documentary film about Dallas’ layered histories and myths, co-directed with Sophia Haid. He has covered contemporary found footage and experimental film practice for Filmmaker, NECSUS, PIN-UP, and Screen Slate.

He holds a BA in Cinema Studies from the University of Chicago and an MA in the Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image from the University of Amsterdam. In 2018, he created a self-published newspaper exploring the history and legacy of Doc Films, UChicago’s film society and the oldest student film group in the country. From 2018 to 2020, Jubak was based in Dallas, where he initiated his photographic research on the city’s self-mythologizing imagery and architecture through a project titled Main Street Canyon.

Metroplex

Metroplex is an experimental
documentary film co-directed by Sophia Haid and Finn Jubak that interrogates how Dallas’ layered histories and myths shape the city’s present and future. Dallas calls itself “the city with no history,” but rather than an assertion
of fact, this moniker is an urge for historical amnesia. Dallas is one
of the fastest growing metro areas in the US, and new housing subdivisions are constantly
filling with transplants. Understanding how Dallas remembers and tells its history is fundamental to envisioning Dallas’ future at this pivotal moment.

Main Street Canyon&#38;nbsp;examines the roles of monumental architecture, city planning and aspirational
imagery in shaping an experience of Dallas. The city center is an obscene monument to capital accumulation, in the form of commodities and wealth, whose extreme nature is only matched by the extreme nature of the extraction that is evident in the surrounding areas.
